What Is a Certificate of Analysis?

A Certificate of Analysis (CoA) is a lot-specific document summarizing analytical results for a research material. This article covers what laboratories should verify on a CoA and how to match it to a vial.

Purpose of a CoA in peptide research

A Certificate of Analysis records what was measured for a specific production lot of a research material. For peptides, a CoA commonly summarizes identity-related methods such as HPLC and mass spectrometry, along with batch identifiers and reporting dates. The document supports laboratory receiving checks and method documentation—it is not a clinical approval or a guarantee of fitness for any non-research purpose.

Because results are lot-specific, a CoA for one batch cannot be applied to another. Laboratories should treat each certificate as a snapshot of that lot’s published analytical summary only. Reorders under the same catalog name may arrive with a new lot and a new certificate.

In many EU research settings, the CoA becomes part of the permanent purchase and inventory record. Filing it carefully saves time when methods are repeated months later or when auditors ask which input was used.

What to look for on the document

Core fields usually include product name or designation, batch or lot number, test methods referenced, and reported results for those methods. Some certificates also note appearance of the lyophilized solid, storage recommendations, and the laboratory that performed the analysis. Read method names carefully: “HPLC purity” and “mass confirmation” answer different questions.

If a field is blank or a lot is not listed in a public CoA library, do not invent missing percentages or substitute numbers from a different certificate. Invus Labs only presents analytical figures that appear on published lot documents.

Date fields matter as well. A certificate tells you when testing was reported for that lot; it does not automatically describe the condition of a vial after improper storage or after reconstitution outside your SOP.

Matching the CoA to the vial

Before using a reference standard in a workflow, compare the batch code on the vial label with the lot number on the certificate. Name similarity alone is insufficient. Packaging should also align with research-use labeling and any storage notes stated on the CoA or product label.

A practical receiving habit is to photograph or scan the vial label into the same folder as the PDF certificate, then enter both identifiers into inventory software. That reduces transcription errors when multiple peptide lots sit side by side.

Limits of certificate interpretation

A CoA describes measurements under the stated methods and conditions. It does not replace method validation in your laboratory, nor does it authorize human or veterinary use. Chromatographic purity percentages, when present, reflect the method’s detection of related substances under those conditions—they are not clinical quality grades.

Certificates also do not define your assay’s acceptance criteria. Your laboratory still sets system suitability, calibration rules, and investigation triggers for unexpected peaks or mass discrepancies.

Using CoAs in receiving and QA workflows

Many EU laboratories file the CoA with receiving records, retain a copy with the method file, and note the lot in inventory systems. This practice supports traceability when repeating assays or investigating unexpected chromatographic peaks.

Catalog materials such as GHK-Cu, KPV, or MOTS-c reference standards should be handled the same way: verify published lot documentation first, then proceed under institutional SOP for research-use-only materials.

When a certificate is updated or replaced in a public library, archive the version that matched the vial at receipt and note any later revisions separately so historical experiments remain interpretable.

Building CoA literacy across the team

CoA literacy should not sit only with senior analysts. Receiving staff need enough training to spot lot mismatches; procurement needs enough context to ask for published certificates; principal investigators need enough skepticism to reject invented purity figures.
